Ethics in Massage Practice

(6 Hours)

 

This course will define professional and personal ethics relating to the practice of massage. Rules of conduct and professional responsibilities of massage therapists will be discussed. Roles and boundaries, both ethical and professional designed to protect the client and practitioner will be examined. Pennsylvania state massage laws, rules, and regulations will be reviewed and discussed. Communication skills, record keeping and confidentiality will also be discussed.

Upon successful completion of this course the participant will be able to:     

  •          Define ethics as it relates to the practice of massage therapy.
  •          Demonstrate a thorough understanding of ethics as defined by NCBTMB, AMTA,    and ABMP.
  •          Demonstrate a clear understanding of Pennsylvania state massage laws and regulations and abide by them.
  •          Identify any and all ethical issues pertaining to professional roles and boundaries and demonstrate how to resolve them.
  •          Demonstrate proficiency in maintaining confidentiality with client medical records in accordance to HIPAA regulations.
  •          Demonstrate effective communication techniques with clients to better serve their needs.
  •          Demonstrate practicing massage therapy ethically with integrity and honesty.

A certificate for 6 hours will be received that can be used toward PA and NJ license renewal. This course is approved through the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) as a continuing education course through the instructor. Her approved provider number is 452037-12. Please bring lunch with you.

About the facilitator:

Donna K. Bowen, LMT, BCTMB, HMCCH has been a practicing Massage Therapist for 20 years and an AMTA member since 2005. In addition to her massage education from the East – West School, Donna has an Associate’s degree in Marketing and Management and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Health studies. Donna has a private practice specializing in working on those diagnosed with chronic conditions and cancer, and works with hospice patients.

Donna has a deep love for massage education and has taught in massage therapy schools for over 15 years along with being an NCBTMB approved CE provider. In addition to her massage studies, she has advanced training in aromatherapy, oncology massage, CranioSacral therapy and Thai Yoga Massage. Donna makes her own line of gem elixirs with essential oils. She is also a Usui and Shamballa Reiki Master.
