Orthopedic Neuromuscular Therapy: Levels I-VI

(66 Hours)

Orthopedic Neuromuscular Therapy is a method of pain relief and postural correction which utilizes basic orthopedic principles as well as neural reflex pathways from trigger points, joints, and nerves to reduce muscle tension, relieve pain, and to balance the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.  Soft tissue manipulation is done and pressure is applied to specific points to alleviate myofascial dysfunctions, fibrotic adhesions, and trigger points.  An anatomical review will be given at the beginning of each level.  In each level, focus will be on learning the trigger point pain patterns, their causes, assessment, and the neuromuscular therapy techniques.  Students will learn treatments for common problems such as back pain, buttock's pain, sciatica, pelvic/sacroiliac joint imbalances, "short leg" syndromes, whiplash, TMJ, herniated discs, disc bulges, pinched nerves, and how to assess each of these issues.  Additionally, students will learn treatments for common problems of the shoulders, arms, knees, ankles, and feet.

The students will also be taught Orthopedic Assessment, which is an evaluation process that gathers information to determine soft tissue pain and injury conditions for the purpose of determining an appropriate treatment plan. We will discuss the importance of assessment to determine if massage would be appropriate for the treatment of pain from some of the most popular conditions we see in the massage office, whether from cumulated trauma disorder (repetitive stress) or acute injury, i.e. whiplash, rotator cuff, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, disk herniation, carpal tunnel, etc. We will go over different scenarios and cover the body from head to toe. As part of the assessment for these conditions, we will discuss contraindications, what precautions to use, perform postural analysis and special tests to determine the severity of the condition, and how to formulate a treatment plan for the massage therapist to perform on the client.

Each level is a day and a half.  A certificate of completion will be given on completion of the six levels.  Wonderful DVDs demonstrating all techniques learned in detail will be available for purchase.

Course Objectives:  Students will have a thorough knowledge of the Trigger Point Patterns of the muscles being reviewed.  Students will be able to successfully perform ONMT techniques that can help the above problems. Students will have a thorough understanding of the assessment protocols for a large variety of conditions they are likely to run into and how to plan and implement proper massage techniques that are individualized for their specific clients.
